Sustainable project of Mantasoa

Just 68 km east of Antananarivo, the peaceful village of Mantasoa sits beside the shimmering Lake Mantasoa, a 20 km² reservoir created in the 1930s to irrigate rice fields and support local communities. Surrounded by rolling hills and remnants of original forest, Mantasoa is a place where nature and culture meet — and where a new generation of visitors can help make a positive impact.

Mantasoa is also known for its remarkable history. In the 1830s, the French industrialist Jean Laborde arrived here and, under the reign of Queen Ranavalona I, built one of Madagascar’s first industrial centers. Using the abundant water and timber of the region, Laborde’s workshops produced everything from tools and pottery to glass and textiles, leaving behind historic sites like his house and tomb that you can still visit today.

So what the Sustainable Reforestation Project Is All About?

This reforestation project invites eco-minded travellers to participate directly in protecting and restoring the forested hills around Lake Mantasoa by planting native tree species in areas affected by past deforestation, to help stabilize soil, enrich biodiversity, and revive wildlife habitat. Partnering with local communities so young trees are cared for year after year and strengthening local stewardship of the land an educational trails on horses as well as forest walks where visitors can learn about the role of forests in water quality, carbon capture, and climate resilience.

By merging nature restoration with heritage tourism, this initiative allows you not just to explore Mantasoa’s beauty and history, but to leave it greener than you found it. Whether you’re helping plant saplings beneath the shade of eucalyptus, hiking peaceful forest paths, or reflecting by the historic sites tied to Laborde’s story, this project offers a meaningful way to connect with Madagascar’s land and culture.
